New Zealand is located in the southern Pacific Ocean, approximately 1,600 kilometers (995 miles) southeast of Australia. The country is comprised of two main islands, the North Island and the South Island, with several smaller islands of which the combined total land area is 270,534 sq. kilometers. Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island with a population of 334,000. Other major urban areas in the North Island include Hamilton (166,000), Napier-Hastings (114,000), and in the South Island, Dunedin (107,000).
